PUBLISHER'S STATEMENT
WE'RE BACK!
We're back! We're back! Pardon my repetitious exuberance but somehow
the mere printed word seems insufficient to express my joy upon the
trumpeted return of Elite magazine. If you've been desperately scanning
the newsstands for your favorite Canadian magazine during the past few
months and wondering if you were going blind (looking at inferior
products will do that to you) then you've noticed that something was
missing from your life. I knew that something was certainly missing
from my life! And I think we owe you an explanation.
In October 1981, legal action was instigated against Elite by various
business groups concerning the ownership of the title and the right to
publish the magazine itself. The rusty wheels of our court system began
to slowly grind and in the midst of the metallic din, Elite magazine
was forced to cease publication until the issue was decided. What this
action amounted to was an attempt to kick the chair out from under me
and this figurative furnishing represented seven years of hard work,
sacrifice and dedication, by me and by the many fine people who have
been associated with Elite magazine over those years. The whole mess
ended nine months later in June 1982. The result of the legal
proceedings? You're holding it in your hand right now.
The decision proved to me that justice is not always blind, although
considering the plodding pace of the court proceedings, it was, in this
case, suffering from a touch of lumbago. During the entire dilemma,
however, we were sure that right was on our side and that justice would
eventually prevail. But in the meantime we had to sit helplessly and
watch while foreign publications infected our nation's moral fiber. It
turned out to be a costly affair;
both in dollars and mental strain and when it was finally resolved, I
didn't know if I was giddy from happiness or punchy from fatigue. But
we have returned as Canada's Number One adult magazine! We survived our
baptism of fire without getting burned ... a little singed perhaps but
that should result in a magazine that's hotter than ever!
Hopefully I've managed to explain the whole predicament to you and
while I'm at it I'd like to apologize for our vague responses to the
many queries from our readers who wanted to know why Elite wasn't
available at its usual outlets or being delivered to their homes. I
know that you'll all appreciate the fact that while the case was before
the courts, we had to exercise extreme caution when discussing the
status of the magazine. However, I can now assure you that Elite is
back, bigger and better than ever. It will be on newsstands on a
monthly basis and all conditions of our subscription service will be
honoured. I regret any inconvenience this legal mishap may have caused
for you, our readers and I thank you all for the concern and loyalty
which prompted you to contact us during what we at Elite now call, The
Dark Ages.
What we now have is a Renaissance. After nine very pregnant months, we
are proud to announce the rebirth of Elite magazine. It was a difficult
delivery and if adversity builds character, I think I've got enough
character to last me for quite some time. But now you're holding our
new baby in your arms and proud parent that I am, I think it's just as
wonderful as the one we conceived way back when. Either way, for me,
it's always been a labour of love. We have returned!
